In 1982 Robert Godin and a few friends produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars (such as solid tops and lacquer finishes) and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of entry and intermediate level players.

Of course there is much more to a great guitar than a solid top with a special finish, so we produced this illustrated guide to help you gain some understanding of the basic elements of a great sounding acoustic guitar.

The S Series

The guitars that make up the Seagull S series represent one of the world's outstanding values in acoustic guitars. The back and sides of the S series models are made from a three-layer lamination of Wild Cherry wood. With a sound that lands somewhere between the mellow tone of a Mahogany guitar and the bright sound of Maple, Wild Cherry has proven itself to be an excellent tone wood. Grown locally, Wild Cherry is also an ecologically friendly choice. S series guitars feature very smooth necks made from Silver Leaf Maple.*

* The S12+ features a Mahogany neck.

The M Series

The M series guitars are made with Mahogany back and sides. Generally speaking, Mahogany back and sides produce a more mellow sound than other tone woods. The M series Seagull guitars feature a unique lamination of Mahogany on each side of a center layer of Wild Cherry. This results in a sound with slightly more highs than a typical Mahogany guitar.

The Artist Series

The Artist series guitars can be identified by the Abalone and Mother-of-Pearl Seagull logo inlaid on the headstock as well as the solo Mother-of-Pearl Seagull set into the twelfth fret.

The bodies of the Artist series guitars are enhanced with solid backs made from the finest tone woods. The sides of the Artist series guitars are made from a special three-way lamination of the same hardwood used in the back of the guitar. The grain of the center layer runs perpendicular to the two outside layers. This technique produces sides that are very resistant to cracking and provide excellent stability to the guitar body, without effecting the sound.

Our most experienced luthiers craft each of these instruments in a small shop away from any distractions where they can devote the additional time and attention to these special guitars. The Artist series guitars are a great choice for the professional player as well as the serious collector.
